Understanding a city as an interconnected system of systems.

The problem

A city is a system of systems — transport, energy, water, housing, governance, public space — each managed by different organisations with different data, different timescales, and different definitions of success. They interact constantly but are rarely observed together. Traffic management doesn't see housing pressure building in a neighbourhood. Energy planning doesn't see the mobility patterns that drive load. Urban development doesn't see the environmental feedback from the infrastructure it builds.

The result is a city that is managed reactively, sector by sector, when the causes of its most persistent problems cut across all of them.

What it does

City Intelligence applies the Kontai method at urban scale. Infrastructure networks, mobility flows, environmental sensors, population activity, and governance data are combined into a single operational picture — one that updates continuously and allows the relationships between systems to become visible.

The interface is designed for multiple roles: a city executive who needs to understand a situation without being an expert in any single domain, a planner who needs to see second-order effects of a proposed change, an operations team tracking a developing situation across infrastructure that normally lives in separate control rooms.

The shift at this scale

At city scale, the key capability is cross-system visibility. A flooding event is not just a drainage problem — it is a mobility problem, an energy problem, and a housing problem simultaneously. A transport disruption is not just a traffic problem — it has economic and environmental consequences that propagate across the city over hours and days.

City Intelligence makes these propagation patterns visible in time to act on them, not just visible in the post-incident report.

Scope

Exploratory concept — the largest scale application of the Kontai pattern. The method that makes a single elevator legible to four stakeholders applies at city scale with the same underlying logic: one coherent model, multiple views, live data rather than periodic reports.
