The problem
A museum is a system in constant motion — visitors moving through galleries, collections cycling through storage and display, events drawing temporary crowds, education programmes running in parallel with the permanent collection. Most of this activity is tracked in fragments: ticket sales here, gallery sensor counts there, collection records in a separate database, event bookings in another.
No one sees the whole. Curators make exhibition decisions without knowing how visitors actually move. Operations staff manage flow without seeing how it connects to programme activity. Leadership reports on engagement without a coherent picture of what engagement means.
What it does
Museum Intelligence builds a unified operational view of the museum as a living system. Visitor flow data, collection records, programme calendars, and spatial sensors combine into a single picture that updates continuously.
The visitor view shows real-time density across galleries, dwell time by zone, and how current flow compares to historical patterns. The collection view maps what is on display, in storage, on loan — and flags works that have high visitor attention but low contextual support. The programme view connects events to their spatial and audience impact. The operations view surfaces the relationships between all three.
Why it matters
The value is not in any single dataset — it is in the connections between them. A temporary exhibition that changes visitor routing affects gallery dwell time everywhere. A school group programme drives concentrated traffic that looks like anomalous demand unless you know the calendar. The system holds these dependencies in view.
Scope
Concept system applying the Kontai method to the cultural institution domain. The pattern — one live model, multiple stakeholder views, coherent data across what were previously isolated systems — transfers directly from the other systems in this Observatory.
